Five Things You Must Do After a Car Accident
Remember These Rules, and Call (818) 783-8446
It is a beautiful sunny day and you are out for a drive on the way to pick
up some groceries. You stop at a red light, waiting to turn left. The
left-hand turn signal turns green, and you pull out into the intersection
to make your turn when you are struck by a driver going the opposite direction.
The driver ran the red light and struck your car causing significant damage.
You are basically alright, but you are feeling some soreness in your neck.
What do you do?
For many people, this situation is common. Everyday occurrences turn into
life- changing moments in a matter of seconds when people are involved
in car accidents. Although some people are able to walk away from accidents
with minor damage to their vehicle and little injuries, others are not
as fortunate. There are some important things that you can do following
an accident that can be greatly beneficial to you.
Remember, if you were involved in a collision, no matter how minor the
accident, follow these five rules:
1. Stay at the Scene (but safely get off the road if possible)
After an accident, if you are able to move off the road, it is important
to do so. You can avoid causing another accident.
2. Call the Police
Contact local law enforcement agencies and medical professionals as soon
as you are able to do so. Never refuse treatment from an EMT, even if
you don't think you are injured because you could be in shock.
3. Exchange Information
Gather valuable information such as the insurance provider, driver's
license number, name, license plate, make, model, and year of the vehicle,
and time and location.
4. Talk to Witnesses and Gather Evidence
If you were near an intersection with pedestrians, or if there were people
who pulled over to help, gather their names and contact information as
well. This can help if a claim needs to be filed and liability is disputed.
5. Talk to an Attorney
It is important that you contact an attorney as soon as possible after
all reports have been filed, all witness statements collected, and it
is determined that everyone is alright.
